Need an MRI? No problem
In early June, Israel's Channel 13 broadcast a report ( https://13tv.co.il/item/news/economics/mri-turkey-903089934/ ) about the rush of Israelis to Istanbul, due to a lack of appointments here in Israel, to get an MRI, even during periods of terrorist threats!!!! Simply absurd.
Indeed, through the public health service, the Kupot Holim, the wait is very, very long to get an appointment, and on top of that, patients are frequently summoned at nighttime hours, at 2 or 3 in the morning, far from their homes. This wait can, of course, put patients' health and even their lives at risk.
Equally serious, if not more so, the situation is the same for getting an appointment for a PET scan , a device designed to detect cancer cells.
The reason for this shortage is very simple: the Ministry of Finance drags its feet in releasing the funds needed to purchase new machines, out of fear that the country's healthcare expenditure budget will explode due to the rising number of examinations. Israel thus finds itself at the back of the pack among OECD countries, even though the country is at the forefront of medical technology!
Faced with this particularly alarming reality, Israelis have two options if they wish to get appointments more quickly:
Go abroad (if health permits), with all the inconveniences this entails: air travel (provided there is no lockdown) and the resulting fatigue, increased risk of Covid contamination, accommodation costs, prolonged absence from work, etc.
Or, take out, before a serious illness appears, a private Israeli health insurance policy.
As you will have understood, since the 1st option is far from ideal, it is the 2nd option that I will focus on.
Within the framework of a private health insurance subscription, for an MRI for example, THE INSURED GETS AN APPOINTMENT WITHIN 3 DAYS MAXIMUM!!!!
The company reimburses 80% of the examination cost, with reimbursement caps that vary, still for an MRI, between 4,000 and 5,500 shekels, depending on the company.
In terms of timescales, the same applies to all other examinations, reimbursed at 80% of course, with reimbursement caps that vary according to the type of examination.
Once again, as I say in every circumstance, insurance, you don't know you need it until the day you do . Do not put off until tomorrow what you owe it to yourself to do today.
Having health insurance is quite simply VITAL!
